West Windsor, already recognized as an environmental leader in New Jersey for many of its green and sustainable initiatives, has a new committee dedicated to showcasing these efforts.##M:[more]##
Under the leadership of Councilwoman Heidi Kleinman, GroWW — which stands for the Greening of West Windsor — was founded two months ago, and Kleinman says she is looking to both expand the committee and find more vendors interested in displaying during the Environmental Education Fair, which organizers are planning to hold on September 20.
Kleinman, the chair of the committee, says its purpose is to highlight the types of environmental practices already established in West Windsor, including the town’s stormwater management practices, its open space preservation efforts, the adoption of a sustainability plan, and the Planning Baord’s efforts to push for LEED standards from applicants.
The Environmental Education Fair is being hosted by the West Windsor Environmental Commission and the West Windsor Farmer’s Market. Randy Kronthal, of the Environmental Commission, and Beth Feehan, of the Farmer’s Market, are co-chairs.
Kleinman says the group is looking for more members who are interested in helping getting vendors to attend the fair. “They do not have to be West Windsor residents; they just need to be passionate about these issues,” she said. In addition to showcasing the township’s own efforts from various township groups, the committee is also looking for vendors that deal with green initiatives, like hybrid cars, solar panel energy, or bicycles. And residents will learn how they can reduce their impact on the environment by composting in their backyards and participating in receycling programs.
The committee is also looking for funding from the township just to help begin the planning process, but the group is anticipating getting corporate sponsorship for the entire event, Kleinman said. The group has already held its first two meetings, and the next one is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at the municipal building.
