While each stage of a baby’s first year brings questions and decisions for parents, the dilemma of beginning baby’s solid foods is usually a big step. Whole Foods Market, Happy Baby, and princetonkids.org coordinated “How to Feed a Happy Baby,” a seminar and cooking demonstration presented by Amy Marlow, a registered dietitian and nutritionist on Saturday, May 3, at Whole Foods Market.##M:[more]##
“Because this is a critical time in infant development, babies should be introduced to whole foods in order to develop healthy, natural food preferences, rather than over-processed foods,” says Marlow, pictured with son, Noah, at right. “Preparing homemade baby food or purchasing a home-style baby food ensures that babies are exposed to what foods really taste like as well as receive the most nutritional value.”
She will demonstrate several recipes including a recipe for Mama Grain — a puree of banana, black beans, and quinoa, as well as tips for making and storing homemade baby food. “One of my favorite recipes is a tasty combination of spinach, pears, and mango,” she says. “For babies seven months old and up, this is a great way to sneak in some greens.”
Marlow, a graduate of University of Delaware with a degree in nutrition and dietetics, completed her training at University of Virginia Medical Center. She received a master’s of public health from University of Maryland.
Marlow consulted for Brainfood, a development program for underprivileged teens. She manages a Fortune 100 company’s employee wellness program and sits on the board of the Greater New York Dietetic Association. As a health writer, she has provided nutrition care in pediatric oncology, high risk obstetrics, as well as pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. She is the mother of Noah, a three-year old boy. — Lynn Miller
