Michael Moore’s documentary film “Sicko” is presented by West Windsor Township Human Relations Council to coincide with National Cover the Uninsured Week. This is the group’s finale in the film series in race, gender, faith, and class issues. The film will be screened at the West Windsor Library on Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m.##M:[more]##
“The film brings attention to the health care crisis facing so many in our community, our state, and our nation,” says Hassan Syed, chair of the Human Relations Council. “The presentation will be followed by a discussion on how we can educate our community to take action on this important issue,” says Syed. One of the featured speakers is Dr. Margaret Lancefield, an internal medicine physician at Princeton Healthcare Medical Associates, and an advocate on the issue of the need for access to affordable primary care for all.
The program will highlight the fact that there are over 47 million uninsured Americans and more than 9 million of them are children. Approximately 1.3 million New Jerseyans are uninsured with about 270,”000 uninsured children making up this population. The cost of health care in New Jersey and the country has increased significantly within the past few years leading to a decrease in employer-based coverage and a steady increase in the number of people losing their coverage due to rising premiums and co-payments.
“This terrible tragedy is being debated in Trenton, our nation’s capital and by the presidential candidates in all major parties,” says Syed. “Given the struggling economy in our state and nation, the time is ripe to have a conversation and plan of action involving our diverse community in West Windsor to help shape the solution(s).” — Lynn Miller
