North Tim Wu advanced in the first round of the NJSIAA singles tournament on June 1 through forfeit.##M:[more]##

South Leland Richardson lost, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinal round of the singles’ tournament on June 4. Demetri Vhranos and Daniel Ng also lost, at first doubles, were also defeated, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals on June 4.

Richardson won 7-6, 6-3, in the in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on June 3. Demetri Vhranos and Daniel Ng, the first doubles team, also won their quarterfinal duel, 6-3, 7-6, and made it to the semifinals on June 3. Richardson won, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the NJSIAA singles tournament on June 1.

Boys Track

North Jim Rosa placed sixth, with a time of 9:11.56, and Joe Rosa placed seventh, with a time of 9:15.38, in the 3,”200, at the state Meet of Champions on June 5. Tyler Corkedale finished ninth, with a time of 4:18.48, and John LiPuma placed 11th with a time of 4:21.34, in the 1,”600. Barnett Wu placed eighth, with a 153-8, in the discus.

At the final day of the Group III and Non-Public A&B state meets on May 31, Ryan Sleeper placed ninth, with a time of 1:57.67 in the 800. Steve Au-Yeung placed tenth, with a time of 1:57:68. Barnett Wu threw a 169-0 in discus for a fourth place finish. Jim Rosa placed fourth, with a time of 9:15.24, and Joe Rosa finished with a time of 9:17.76, in the 3,”200.

Tyler Corkedale placed sixth, with a time of 4:20.45, in the 1600 at the NJSIAA Group III meet on May 30. John LiPuma placed seventh in the event.

South Keith Griffith finished third, with a time of 1:53.25, in the 800 at the state Meet of Champions on June 5.

Girls Track

North Chelsea Walter came in third in the long jump, with a 17-7.50, at the state Meet of Champions on June 5. Trish Reilly came in fifth in the 1,”600 with a time of 4:59.89.

Chelsea Walters hit a 17-0 and placed fourth in the long jump at the Group III state meet on May 31.

Trish Reilly came in sixth place, with a time of 5:04.04, in the 1600 on May 30, the first day of the Group III Girls State Championship Meet.

South Katie Kellner placed sixth in the girls’ 3,”200 meters, with a time of 10:45.08 — which beat her own school record set at the Mercer County Championships earlier this year — at the Meet of Champions on June 5. Tia Williams finished eighth in the girls’ shot put, 40-1, which is also a new personal record.

Sports Briefs

Matt Lalli, Princeton Junction resident and senior at Colgate University, was recently selected in the Major League Lacrosse Draft held at Stevens Institute of Technology. He was drafted by the San Francisco Dragons in the second round and was the 16th player selected overall.

The West Windsor Plainsboro Fusion U-19 girls team defeated Delaware Valley, 3-1, on May 31. Goals were scored by Stephanie Miezin and Chelsea Corell, who had two goals. Corell also had an assist. Corell and Allison Pungello split goaltending duties.

Erin Conlon, a 2006 High School South graduate, was part of the Stanford Lightweight Women’s Varsity-8 team that finished its season on June 7 with a bronze medal in the 104th Annual National Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (IRA Regatta) in Cherry Hill. The team also had a first place finish in the PAC 10 championship in Sacramento, CA in May and the A.W. Coggeshall Cup in Cherry Hill and the San Diego Crew Classic in April.

Girls Hoops Camp

The 2008 Mercer County Elite Camp, run by High School South girls basketball coach Lisa Guarneri, will be held this year from July 14 to July 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grover Middle School. The basketball camp is open to girls in grades 7 through 10 who want to improve their individual skills, including ball handling, shooting, movement without the ball, passing, and position work.

The camp costs $200 and is limited to the first 100 girls. Each day of camp will include a lecture/session on nutrition, speed and agility training, college recruiting, and weight training. To register, visit www.wwparks-recreation.com/summer.html.

Guarneri — a starting member of the University of Illinois basketball team that advanced to the sweet sixteen and second round of the NCAA and a starting member and captain of the Virginia Tech basketball program that advanced to the second round of the NCAAs and final 4 of the WNIT — has coached at High School South since 2004, with three state playoff appearances and a 53-25 overall record. Jessica Guarneri, who received NCAA Division 2 All American honors at Wingate and who is High School South’s junior varsity and assistant varsity coach, is also on the camp’s coaching staff.
