While the 95-acre Grover Farm, off Village Road East, is still being farmed, patrons no longer will be able to pick their own produce.##M:[more]##
The farm was purchased by the township in 1994, before state and county preservation programs existed, and township officials made an agreement with the Grover family that allowed the family to remain on site, until they decided to move, says Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh. The family does pay rent to the township.
Currently, another West Windsor farmer, Steve Jany, farms and maintains the land. Peter Grover continued to run the pick-your-own portion of the farm every fall, but Hsueh says Grover, in his late 80s, wanted to have a “real retirement” this year. Regardless, the land will still be farmed, Hsueh says.
The township’s purchase of the property prevented 93 housing units from being built on the property, Hsueh says.
