Sandra Shapiro, right, of West Windsor was among those named Volunteers of the Year by the New Jersey unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) at a recent luncheon at Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Plainsboro.
Shapiro has volunteered with RFB&D since 1992 and has served in many capacities including recording science texts and serving on the unit’s board of directors. She also developed the unit’s website and has continued as its webmaster. In addition, she has worked with the unit’s educational outreach center on several initiatives for schools. In the past year she volunteered more than 200 hours in the recording studio alone.##M:[more]##
RFB&D is the nation’s educational library serving people who cannot effectively read standard text because of visual impairment, dyslexia or other physical disability. Its audio textbooks are available to its members on compact disc or via download from its website. The New Jersey unit, located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Seminary in Plainsboro, has close to 400 volunteers who in the past year recorded almost 10,”000 hours of educational material for its members.
Other West Windsor residents honored include Barbara Greene, Loretta Bercuk, Larry Epstein, Jean Gunkel, Harriet Ingerslev, Mindy Langer, Susanne McNatt, Clif Giddings, Dorothe McGowan, and Nancy Skalinski. Plainsboro residents honored include Patty Cooper, Jeff Kaplan, Jim Hastings, and Peg Hastings.
