Martin Luther

King Jr. Day

Linda Maa, a freshman at High School North, received honorable mention in the essay contest for students in grades 9 and 10 in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay and poster contest. The celebration and awards presentation will be held on Monday, January 15, at Princeton University’s Richardson Auditorium, beginning at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public. For information call 609-258-6429.

Students in grades 7 to 12 were asked to write a letter to President-elect George W. Bush, advising him on what he should say or do to improve relations between the races in this country and to help the country achieve the goals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essays were submitted by 419 students from 20 schools.

The featured speaker at the celebration will be the university’s new vice president for campus life, Janet Smith Dickerson. The program features music by the New York Daily News Carribeat CASYM (Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Youth Movement) Steel Orchestra, a group of 50 students, ages 6 to 18, who performed at the university’s 1999 MLK program.

“This is the university’s official observance of Martin Luther King Day, and all members of the Princeton community are encouraged to attend,” said Robert Durkee, vice president for public affairs. “Dr. King has left a living legacy that challenges us all to strive for a better world. Attending the tribute is a fitting way to honor this legacy.”
