Be ready for an evening of laughter at High School South’s night of comedy on Friday, January 5, at 7:30 p.m. The event is organized by Senior Spirit, the organization founded in 2004 by a group of students from the class of ‘05 in hopes of increasing school spirit. ##M:[more]##

This year’s theme is, “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Since most of the members are seniors and the first three months of senior year are filled with college applications, visiting colleges, and making big decisions, the parents do the bulk of the work for this event.

One person with the organization since its inception is Debbie Petro of West Windsor. She teaches three-year-olds at Cranbury Presbyterian Nursery School. Her son, Joe Petro, now at University of Maryland, was a member of the original group. Her daughter, Lauren, is a senior at South. “While many teens do not want to do anything with their parents, Senior Spirits brings kids and their parents closer,” says Petro.

Steve Schoepfer, another parent, is the comedy night coordinator and was instrumental is obtaining the headlining New York City comedians, Brad Trackman and Pete Dominick. Trackman has been on both “NBC’s Later” and “New Joke City.” Dominick has been seen at the Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s, is the audience warm-up for Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report,” and is host of Sirius Satellite Radio’s Comedy Channel.”

The evening begins with a dessert cafe featuring delicacies baked by the parents. Jeff Groves, a senior, is organizing pre-show entertainment for the cafe from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. George Schoepfer and Pat Murphy, juniors, will be filming the events and producing a documentary of the evening. Marc Vinci and Chris Sandgren, both juniors, will be doing the sounds and lights.

The comics opening the show include Rob Cave (High School South, Class of 2005); seniors Andrew O’Shaughnessy, Crawford Miller, John Macaluso, Mike Bond, and Jesse Madera; and Michael Kenny, a junior. Cave was the winner of the inaugural show in 2004. Run similar to “The Last Comic Standing,” the hand-picked teacher judges (by the students) include Eric Daniels, Leslie Fisher, Don Gilpin, Rose Leonard, Andrea Scaturo, Amanda Duchossois, and Brian Welsh. Prizes will be awarded.

“I hope that this event will be as good as two years ago,” says Petro. “We ran out of seats then and this year we are opening up the entire theater.” $10 tickets may be available at the door. —Lynn Miller
