Firefighters from West Windsor put out the blaze in about 50 minutes, according to the township’s director of emergency services, Jim Yates. East Windsor, Washington, Hightstown, Hamilton, Lawrence, and Plainsboro firefighters also arrived at the scene to assist in the putout. Between 30 and 40 firefighters worked in rotating groups to extinguish the flames. One West Windsor fireman was treated for heat exhaustion at University Medical Center at Princeton.
According to Yates, the fire started on the outside of the house shortly after noon that day. He said the house had no smoke detectors, but residents safely evacuated once they smelled smoke. No civilians were injured.
The local chapter of the Red Cross is providing housing to the families until they can move back to their homes. Red Cross spokesperson Diane Concannon said One family has three children, and one has two. The families have asked not to be identified by name.
