Sabrina Olgin, a student at Millstone River School, and Ray Gochuico, a student at Village School, attended the Annual D.A.R.E. Leadership Summer Camp sponsored by D.A.R.E. New Jersey, and the New Jersey National Guard. The four-night overnight camp was held at the College of New Jersey in Ewing. Sabrina and Ray, who will be seventh grade students at Grover Middle School in September, were nominated by teachers and counselors at their respective schools to attend the camp as student representatives from the West Windsor School District.##M:[more]##
The focus of the camp is to teach leadership skills to students who are potential leaders in their community, in the hope that they will be leaders in their communities and foster the D.A.R.E. concepts of resisting drugs and violence among their peers. The camp included daily military drills and exercises, team building activities, and field trips to Fort Dix, Battleship New Jersey, New Jersey Adventure Aquarium, Funplex, and the Freedom Fest at the Horse Park of New Jersey.
The counselors at the camp were police officers from various municipalities in New Jersey and New Jersey National Guard volunteers. Some of the National Guard Volunteers actually served in Iraq, are on leave and volunteered to do this camp on their leave.
Both Sabrina and Ray received Special Camper Awards, which were awarded to four children at the camp this summer. The award recognized four children who were exceptional leaders of their respective teams at the camp with Special Camper Awards. There was a graduation banquet and ceremony at the Battleground Country Club on the last day of the camp.
“It was such a valuable experience for Sabrina and Ray,” says Elise Olgin, Sabrina’s mother. “This is the first year that West Windsor sent students to the camp and I would love to see other students from West Windsor attend the camp in the future.”
