The award winning Pirate Marching Band from High School South has kicked off its performing season by receiving top awards in the first major competition of the fall. The Pirates took first place overall in the Group II open class of the United States Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) competition at Hunterdon Central High School. A total of 17 bands competed, including four Group II Open class bands. The Pirates also won the awards for Best Color Guard, Best Percussion, Best Marching, Best Effect, and Best Music.
This year’s show, entitled “Windows,” features arrangements of music by David Gillingham. The band’s drill is written by Mark Fisher, with music arrangements by Mike Davis, a Plainsboro resident. ##M:[more]##
The band is under the direction of High School South teacher Scott Collins, and under the field direction of Joshua Suslak, drum major, a senior at South.
The 48-member Pirate Marching Band will compete in a total of seven states and regional USSBA competitions, including the national championship that will be held at the M&T Band Stadium, in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to USSBA competitions, the band performs at all home and away football games.
