Black History Month

High School South students served as docents for a special exhibit in honor of Black History Month. Working with the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, High School South students presented detailed information to district K-8 students on artwork and artifacts that are part of the exhibits at the Heritage Museum. Nancy Hoch, High School South Social Studies teacher, was the district coordinator for the program.##M:[more]##West Windsor-Plainsboro African American Parents Support Group had an information display at West Windsor Township office lobby during the month of February. A display of photos from the Black History program held at High School North on February 9 was included.The program included a moment of silence for David Ellis, a senior at University of Maryland and a graduate of High School South. He died in a fire on January 24.The fourth grade class from Millstone River School presented a play about Rosa Parks. Kali McMillan, a senior at High School South, presented handmade cards and other Afrocentric crafts. Informational tables presented an Afrocentric board game, jewelry, College Catalysts, and a display of black books including the Anti-Racist Cookbook. Michael Reid, president of the group, was the emcee.Gail Mitchell, a fourth grade teacher at Millstone River School, had a quilt on display highlighting historical events in Black History. Designs on the quilt include the unveiling of the Black Heritage Stamp in Philadelphia by Marian Anderson and Langston Hughes’ picture signifying his poetry.High School North presented Lenworth Gunther, a history professor and director of the Africana Center at Essex County College, on February 10 in a speech about carrying the baton. He spoke to students in both the morning and the afternoon.Students from Grover Middle School PAWS program produced a three-minute video on comments that Grover students and faculty had about Martin Luther King Jr. PAWS is a television morning program run by Richard Coppola at Grover.
