Alan, 14, an eighth grade student at Grover Middle School, is the first place winner for grades seven to nine. Mimi, 10, a fourth grade student at Village School, is the winner in grades four to six.
“Their art teacher encouraged them to participate,” says their mother, Victoria. Alan and Mimi study with Sharon Liu, an art teacher in Piscataway. Their father, Paul Fang, met her when he was a journalist with World Journal, a Chinese newspaper. When his children expressed an interest in art and they were wait-listed in art classes in the WW-P area, he remembered Liu. “We both appreciate art but cannot do it and cannot teach it,” says their mother. “A good teacher is hard to find and we will take them as long as she can keep their interest.”
The family moved from Taiwan close to 10 years ago and settled in Fort Lee for four years. Seven years ago they moved to a townhouse in Plainsboro and three years ago they moved to a larger townhouse in West Windsor.
Paul is now an executive with a manufacturer of car headlights. Victoria works with computers at Comcast. “We love the big open space here,” says Victoria. “In Taiwan we never got so close to nature.”
