The days of having only one cable company to choose from may soon be over for West Windsor residents. Township Council will consider a request by Verizon to offer cable television service to the town during its meeting on Monday, June 12, at 7 p.m.
In order for a business to offer cable service to customers in a New Jersey community, it must first gain approval of a franchise agreement by the town’s governing body.
Currently, Comcast is the only provider of cable television service in West Windsor.
“Although I haven’t really compared pros and cons (of the proposal), the reaction from community is that they’re looking for other options.,” says Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh. “Whether it’s for better or worse, I don’t know. From the townships perspective we’d like to see more choices.”
Verizon has filed applications in 92 communities throughout the state seeking franchise agreements. It is also lobbying at the state level to change the law to allow statewide franchise agreements.
