West Windsor Eagle Scouts Adam Schuit and Michael Perl have coordinated the inaugural Ten Commandment Hike under the auspices of the Central New Jersey Council of Jewish Committee on Scouting, chaired by Alan Grossman of Metuchen.##M:[more]## “This event for young people is very important, considering all the religious misunderstanding in the world today,” says Grossman. “It will help bring a better understanding among young Christians, Muslims, and Jews.”##M:[more]##
Schuit, a junior at High School North, is Troop 40’s junior assistant scoutmaster. Perl, a senior at South, is Troop 66 junior assistant scoutmaster. Ben Rubin of Woodbridge, also an Eagle Scout, is working with them.
The ecumenical event commences at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at Friday, November 24, at 8 a.m. for registration. Scouts should wear a uniform and any religious medals earned. Boys should bring a water bottle and a daypack and review hiking skills. The opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m.
The scouts will hike as one group for the four miles with stops at First Presbyterian Church, St. David the King Catholic Church, Windsor Chapel, and Congregation Beth Chaim. Participants include the Islamic Society of Central New Jersey and West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh. Members of the clergy, who will discuss two different commandments at each stop, include Lamont Gunkel, Reverend Floyd W. Churn, Dennis L. Gill, Reverend Timothy J. Capewell, Fakhruddin Ahmed, and Rabbi Eric Wisnia.
Each registrant receives a commemorative patch designed for the hike, a first aid kit from Johnson & Johnson, and a gift from Church and Dwight. Scouts must be picked up at Congregation Beth Chaim no later than 1:15 p.m.
