Eagle Scout
David Colbert of West Windsor celebrated becoming an Eagle Scout at the Boy Scout Court of Honor on March 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dutch Neck with more than 100 people in attendance.
David, 16, a junior at High School South, was born in Minnesota and moved to West Windsor before he was two. At High School South, he is on the lacrosse team. Last fall he interned at Congressman Rush Holt’s office.
He began his Scouting career in 1993 as a Tiger Cub in West Windsor Cub Scout Pack 66. He joined Boy Scout Troop 40 in West Windsor.
“In his roles as assistant senior patrol leader, quartermaster, and instructor, he has been a great asset to the troop to help us plan and run our many campouts, community service, and other activities,” says troop leader Michael Schuit. “David particularly enjoyed his leadership roles in Troop 40’s Wildness Survival and the Cold Weather prep camp-outs and has attended the two-night Klondike winter campout in the Poconos.”
David has attended many Boy Scout summer camps at Hawk Mountain, No-Be-BoSco, and Kittatinny scout reservations in New Jersey. He attended the 2001 National Jamboree at Fort AP Hill in Virginia and will attend the BSA National Scout Reservation in Philmont, New Mexico, this summer on an eight-day horseback trek.
An active participant with the troop in the annual Special Olympics weekend held at the College of New Jersey for the past four years, he also participated in the troop’s many weekend trips and service projects.
His Eagle project entailed the design, construction, and installation of four benches at the West Windsor Community Park on a hill overlooking the two soccer fields. The endeavor involved 52 volunteers and took 228 man-hours to complete. The fields are used for West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, travel, and recreation league soccer, as well as for alternate frisbee.
David conceived this project while playing freshmen soccer for High School South and noticed all of the spectators standing. The new benches seat close to 32 people.
His family members have been active in both Boy and Girl scouting. His mother, Myra, has been both a den and Girl Scout leader for many years. His sister Meg, 19, a former Girl Scout, graduated from High School South in 2003 and is a student at the University of Rochester. His father, Ken, is an active member of the troop committee and is also an Eagle Scout.
