Evelyn Turney, Town Center School’s PTA Health and Safety chairperson, and Barbara Lalli, the school’s physical education teacher, are working with the PTA-sponsored program encouraging both walking and reading among the students.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, children in grades one to three are given the opportunity to walk a half mile during the lunch recess. Rewards given to the students include a key chain after completing their first mile and a new book at the end of eight miles.

Over 300 students, close to half of the school’s attendees, walk each day of the program. Since April more than 5,”600 laps have been walked by the students and more than 1,”500 cumulative miles have been completed.

Math for St. Jude

Eileen Beam and Audrey Courtney-Quinn coordinated the recent Mathathon at Village School, the annual benefit for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. More than 200 fifth grade students completed math problems, obtained sponsors, and collected $16,”581.91 — more than $5,”000 more than last year. This year’s collection brings the total raised by Village School students for St. Jude’s to over $70,”000.

Hearty Lunches

Wicoff School students made 360 hearty lunches that were donated to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. They used Sunbutter, a peanut-free peanut butter replacement, so that even students with extreme peanut allergies were able to participate in the event.

Sungold Foods of North Dakota donated the Sunbutter. SuperFresh and McCaffrey’s contributed toward the purchase of apples and jelly. Wicoff families provided bread, juice, and desserts for the lunches. PTA volunteers coordinated the project to help make the day a successful community service project. Michael Welborn, the school’s principal, coordinated the project.

Musical Notes

High School South String Ensemble and High School South Chorale received first place awards at the Azalea Music Festival in Norfolk, Virginia. They also received trophies as grand champions of the festival in the orchestra and choir divisions.

Aumona Bhattacharya, Alexandra Dicker, Grayee Mei, Julian Liang, Phillip Yu, Kevin Luan, Justin Chen, Tony Kosar, Rohit Kabra, Renee Stewart, David Lin, Andrew Delman, and Mike Zhao were selected as members of the 2005 All-State Orchestra. Their first performance will be in November at the New Jersey Education Association Convention.

Latin Scholar

Katie Brossman, 14, of Plainsboro, received an honors designation of “Cum Laude” in the National Latin Examination, presented by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. She also made the honor roll for the second trimester at the Princeton Day School where she is a freshman. She is the daughter of Bill and Euna Kwon Brossman.

Phone Cards

High School North Interact Club donated close to $500 in prepaid international phone cards to Major General Glenn K. Reith to give to soldiers in Iraq. The two-week project included raising half of the money through a club project and the other half from leftover lunch money change.
