Deaths

Roderick Beach, 78, of Kensington died August 10 in Silver Spring, Maryland. Survivors include his brother Frederick Beach Jr. of West Windsor. Chase Marie Applebaum, infant daughter of Michael Applebaum and Mariann Matarese, died August 15 at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. Survivors include maternal grandparents Luigi and Dolores Matarese of West Windsor. Donations may be made to Abington Memorial Hospital Special Care Nursery, 1200 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001.

Stanley Dancer, 78, died September 1 at his home in Pompano Beach, Florida. Born in the Edinburgh section of West Windsor, he was the son of a potato farmer. Known for his harness racing, he won his first race at Freehold Raceway only two months before his 18th birthday.

His three Triple Crown awards were in 1968 with Nevele Pride, 1970 with Most Happy Fella, and 1972 with Super Bowl. He won the Hamletonian four times. Dancer became the first harness racer to earn more than $1 million in one season, and Cardigan Bay was the first horse to earn more than $1 million in 1964. His final race at Garden State Park was in 1995 where he won in the New Jersey Sires Stakes.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Jody; four children, Ronald and his wife, Brenda, Susan and her husband, David Moyher, Stanley Richard, and Shaldonna and her husband Jeffrey Chaisson; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rev. Andrew James Patterson, 74, of Savannah, Georgia died September 7 at home. Survivors include a son, Larry Middlebrooks of Plainsboro. Guestbook is at www.savannahnow.com.

Thoralf M. Stangeland, 72, of Staten Island died September 8 at Princeton Care Center. Survivors include hi daughter Cindy Strangeland-Gorcynski of West Windsor. Donations may be made to March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605.

William C. Waynberg, 61, died September 11 at his home in Benicia, California. Born in Marseille, France, he was raised in Maryland and lived in West Windsor for 15 years.

He had a career in the motion picture industry with Columbia Pictures, United Artists, and Warner Brothers.

Survivors include his wife of seven yeas, Dolores; daughters Gina Trulove of Orlando, Florida, Nikki Kowalski of Ewing, Ginger Wilson of Berkeley Heights, and Jody Wayneburg of San Francisco, California; step daughter Alison Kenyon and stepsons Derrick and Dylan Kenyon of Benecia; grandchildren Katy and Mitchell Truelove, Brittany, Bryan, and Brandson Kowalski, and Andrew Wilson; and brother Leon and his wife.

A graveside service was held in Vallejo, California.

Philip K. Brand, 50, of West Windsor died September 13 at Capital Health Systems at Fuld. Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong area resident and the retired director of recreation and parks for West Windsor Township.

A graduate of Steinert High School, Class of 1973, he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Temple University. After earning first-team All Mercer County honors in basketball, he played at Temple and had accepted a contract to play professional basketball in Europe, when his 27-year battle with kidney disease began.

Survivors include his children, Philip K. and Colleen E. Brand; his former wife and caregiver, Peggy Seiler-Brand, all of Mercerville; his brother and first kidney donor, Christopher R. Brand; and sister, Amy K. Brand, both of Tampa, Florida; relatives in New York and Connecticut; the Seiler family, including his second kidney donor, Lori Seiler Sakiey.

Mary Neville Lyons died September 15 in Mobile, Alabama. Survivors include her sister Reba C. Lyons Fogarty of West Windsor. Donations may be made to the Providence Hospital Foundation.

Shirley M. Keller, 79, of Plainsboro died September 16 in Princeton. Survivors include her children Janet, Harold, William, Robert, and his wife Pamela; brother Edward Pfannkoch; and seven grandchildren. Contact Selover Funeral Home in North Brunswick for more information.
