West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South’s football team has come full circle. The Pirates played Nottingham as underdogs in the first game of the season on September 10 and came away with a surprise 17-7 win. This Saturday, November 19, they play again.##M:[more]##

But this time when the Pirates face off against the Northstars — at home at 1 p.m. — they will have an opportunity to win the Colonial Valley Conference outright and advance to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship game.

The Pirates, who had a combined 5-15 record over the last two years coming into this season, posted a 9-0 record and already won the opening game of the CJ III playoffs on November 12 against Colts Neck, 24-21.

If the Pirates win on Saturday they will move on to play in the sectional championship game against Ocean or Wall townships during the first weekend in December.

It would also be the first 10-win season in the school’s history, and the first time since 1987 that the team would play in CJ III final. That year, they lost the championship game to Franklin.

Anyone who thinks that it’s a lock that the match-up against Nottingham this time around will be a repeat performance of the first might want to take another look. Since losing to South, the Northstars revamped their lineup and have won nine straight games.

But the Pirates have also gotten stronger each week. Going into the season, Todd Smith, South’s new head coach, scrapped the run-and-shoot offense the team had played in recent years and installed a smash-mouth style that made the Pirates the second-ranked rushing offense in the CVC.

In the Colts Neck game, running back Ryan Lupo not only scored the winning touchdown, he also rushed for a career-high 258 yards on 26 carries.

Lupo, a junior, is ranked in the top five in the league in rushing, with 1,”050 yards on 103 carries and 15 touchdowns. Earl Burgess is second with 573 yards and 8 touchdowns, followed by Stuart Adams with 208 yards, 3 TDs, and Brian Morris, 203 yards, 3 TDs.

The hard-nosed offense is matched with an equally tough defensive squad that held opponents pointless four times this season. In the nine games so far this year, the Pirates have allowed only 61 points, and seven touchdowns.

Win or lose this weekend, the Pirates will play a home game against Lawrenceville on Saturday, November 26, at noon. Based on Saturday’s results, the game will either be the Pirates’ last chance to reach 10 wins this year, or an opportunity to keep sharp before the CJ III final the following weekend.
