Scouts Collect Socks

Nine Dutch Neck Elementary School Girl Scout Troops donated socks and t-shirts for refugees from Sri Lanka. The event was planned and organized by Kate Henkel, Carey Bloom, Louisa Ho, Carol Foster, Karen Berger, Mary Kuzy, and Natalie Caricato.

Leaders involved include: Dina Laresch, Connie Sullivan, Troop 217; Kate Henkel, Karen Berger, Troop 216; Jenny Hartigan, Jayanthi Jothi, Sabina Ghesani, Troop 1608; Mary Kuzy, Beth Kunkle, Troop 665; Lynn Mahmood, Melissa Magid, Troop 676; Karen Berger, Becky Huselid, Troop 1612; Kate Henkel, Carey Bloom, Troop 600; Louisa Ho, Troop 677; Carol Foster, Colleen O’Cone, Troop 1896; and Natalie Caricato, Troop 1285.

Equine Award

Nancy Rowbotham of Plainsboro won an achievement award with her Irish thoroughbred/draft cross, Uno, at the Eastern States Dressage and Combined Training Association’s year-end award banquet, held at the Battleground Country Club in Manalapan.

Although Rowbotham has been riding for three years, 2003 was the first year she began showing. She works for the State Department of Community Affairs and takes riding lessons from Lisa Marie Post, the owner and trainer at Chestnut Ridge Equestrian Center.

The organization, one of the largest in the country for the sports of combined training and dressage, holds several shows a year at the Horse Park of New Jersey.

Science Award

Nobel Laureate Russell Hulse of Plainsboro, a scientist at the U. S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, has been elected a Fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He won the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics jointly with Princeton University Professor Joseph Taylor for their 1974 discovery of the first binary pulsar.

A graduate from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Hulse received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Massachusetts. He joined the staff at PPPL in 1977 where he is concentrating on new initiatives for the science educator. He has been a visiting professor in physics, science, and math education at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Engagement

Courtney Elizabeth Sirhal and Daniel Hallock Reed are planning a July wedding. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sirhal of West Windsor. A graduate of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, she is a senior majoring in business at Boston College.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Reed of Irvine, California. He is also a senior majoring in business at Boston College.

Jennifer Bessler and Paul Borusicwicz are planning a May, 2005 wedding. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bessler of West Windsor. A graduate of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, Class of 1999, she will graduate from West Chester University in May.

The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mullin of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Borusicwicz of Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. A graduate of West Chester University, he is employed with Haines Furniture Restoration.

Stacy Melisa Peckham and David Lawrence Perlman are planning a June wedding. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elihu Kaufman of Hillsborough and Mr. Earl Peckham of West Windsor. She is in her fourth year of doctoral studies at the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania.

The prospective groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Perlman of New Rochelle, New York. He is a social worker at New York University Medical Center.
